Our hearts and thoughts are with all those affected at the Sandy Hook Elementary School and the community of Newtown, Connecticut.

In the wake of this horrific tragedy, police and schools in San Diego are on heightened alert.

Police officers have visited local schools today to establish a presence and survey campuses to ensure that we are aware and protective of our school communities and grounds. Local law enforcement officials visited both our Mission Hills and Linda Vista campuses in this effort. Please know that our school counselors are available for our students should they need some support.

The Parker community wishes for peace, comfort and healing for the community of Sandy Hook Elementary School.

Sincerely,

Kevin Yaley
Head of School

Parker students from Middle and Upper School divisions battled for the gold at the 2013 San Diego County History Day on March 2. Following Saturday's competition, 36 Parker Upper School students and seven Middle School students advance to the California State competition at the end of April.

History Day is an annual event bringing students in grades 4 through 12 together for project-based competitions. Students participate as individuals or groups, focusing on an historical theme found on a local, national, or global level. The History Day theme of 2013 was "Turning Points in History: People, Ideas, Events."

The Middle and Upper School Social Studies departments would like to thank the teachers and parents who assisted with coaching, interviews, and judging. Special thanks to Carol Brown and the library staff, and Quoc Vo and the technology team who donated time, space, assistance, and equipment to help students with their research.

June Global Studies Trips

Beginning Monday, March 4, applications will be available for our June Global Studies trips to Vietnam and South Africa.

For the past two years, we have offered a June trip to South Africa for students unable to participate on the February trips. This year, because the Vietnamese New Year conflicted with our Vietnam itinerary and forced us to postpone the trip, we are offering it as a June option.

If enough students apply for each trip (12 per trip), we will do our best to run both. If neither trip has 12 students, Mr. Crowley will consult with the students that have applied and the prospective chaperones and see if we can agree to all go on one trip or the other.

Students interested in applying for either trip should see Mr. Crowley for an application ASAP. The application deadline for the June trips is Monday, April 1.

The trips will run from the weekend of June 15-16 to June 29-30. Total trip costs will depend on the number of students participating but should be about the same amount as the costs for the February trips. Details on each trips itinerary will be forthcoming and posted online. Please contact Mr. Crowley if you have further questions.

Parker's W.A.R. Lords (We Are Robot Lords), FIRST Robotics Team 2485, is advancing to the 2013 FIRST Robotics Competition Championship following their regional win. The Championship will take place in St. Louis from April 24 - 27. Matches are held between 400 FIRST teams visiting from across the globe.

At the Inland Empire Regional on March 30, the team of more than 40 Upper School students were crowned champions. The W.A.R. Lords won the competition as part of an alliance with Team 1538 from High Tech High School and Team 968 from West Covina High School. The W.A.R. Lords won the excellence in engineering award for excellent work on and explanation of various systems.

W.A.R. Lords member Kay Toma '13 said, "It was a tremendous moment for the whole team as we have all been working incredibly hard each and every year to improve and qualify for nationals."

Currently led by faculty member Ryan Griggs, the Robotics Team was founded by Parker students in 2007. Since then, the group has grown in size and scope of projects. Says Griggs, "I'm very proud of how this program has grown, how the Francis Parker community has embraced it, and especially of how our students continue to make it remarkable. I'm routinely impressed with the dedication and thought they put into all our team endeavors."

Students use their skills and interest in engineering, manufacturing, programming, design, graphics, and business. The W.A.R. Lords have received the FIRST Creativity award for the past consecutive three years, as well as the Gracious Professionalism award.

The Global Journal Project is a non-profit organization that enables school communities to share stories and form relationships across international and cultural boundaries by raising awareness of global issues through the prespectives of member communities. Private, public and international schools collaborate in a student-run business to produce print and online magazines with content from partner-school communities. The profits earned by the various chapters are reinvested in service through community-based educational events and member-selected philanthropic projects.

This is the first year for the Francis Parker School Chapter, but founding officers Lou Tauber '16, Jay Gardenswartz '14, Thomas Marshall '14, Olivia Ghosh '15, and Kian Bagheri '15 have already raised $1800, and will have their first print piece out in May.
